Navigating Different Budgets: Directing Short Films with Paudie Baggott

Director Paudie Baggott will delve into the process of directing short films at different budget levels. The event is designed for filmmakers, particularly directors, and it offers practical insights into various aspects of filmmaking, focusing on three short films Baggott directed, each produced under a distinct budget range.

Director Paudie Baggott will use three of his short films as case studies to demonstrate the creative and logistical challenges and opportunities that come with directing at various budget scales.

The Case Studies

  • Rip to the Rescue (€12,500) – Produced under the Short Grass Films Kildare scheme, this film represents a lower-budget production.
  • The Innkeeper (€25,000) – Funded by The Pitch Short Film Fund, offering a mid-range budget example.
  • Peat (€60,000) – Created with support from Focus Shorts, highlighting a higher-end short film production.

Each of these films serves as a teaching tool, allowing Baggott to break down how budget affects a director's approach to the film's development, production, and overall vision. Attendees will gain insights into the creative leadership required at different budget levels and the practical realities of working within financial constraints.

Format of the Event:

  • Screenings: The audience will likely watch the three films to understand their scope and style within each budget range.
  • Presentations: Paudie will present the challenges and experiences he faced on each project.
  • Open Discussion: There will be an opportunity for attendees to ask questions and engage in discussions about the intricacies of directing.

Topics Covered:

  1. Creative Leadership: Exploring the role of the director as the creative lead, responsible for realizing the vision of the short film.
  2. Working with Heads of Departments (HoDs): Directors need to effectively communicate and collaborate with department heads like cinematography, production design, and more, to bring the film to life.
  3. Director-Producer Relationship: This includes learning how to balance creative ambitions with budgetary limitations and how to maximize resources to enhance the final product.
  4. Development of Short Films: Understanding the director’s involvement during the development stage of a short film—how they shape the project creatively before shooting begins.
