Course Objective:

This course is designed to teach advanced lighting techniques and philosophies for cinematography and film professionals. We move beyond the basics of lighting, and look at practical examples of lighting methods you can apply

to real world scenarios to solve more difficult lighting challenges.

Course Profile:

During this 5-day beginners/advanced lighting workshop cinematographers, gaffers and filmmakers will have the opportunity to explore dramatic lighting techniques used in high-end films and TV series.

This class is led by Mo Flam, a Chief Lighting Technician, with over 40 years of experience in the industry.

Through hands-on sessions, lectures, screenings and discussions you will explore the importance of light in visual storytelling and the techniques and processes to execute complex lighting setups.

Working collaboratively as a film crew, you take on the creative and technical challenges of feature film cinematography. The class will learn how to scout a location and plan lighting requirements for a scene.

You will begin to tackle challenging lighting situations with goals to achieve specific visual aesthetics through hands-on sessions.

You will light scenes with LED, HMI, tungsten, fluorescent units and learn to use grip equipment to shape and control light through practical exercises.

You will light a variety of interior and exterior residential and commercial spaces, as well as car interiors, for day and night scenes, and dramatic scenarios with actors, using the most recent and advanced technology in film lighting.

      •     Basic lighting terminology

      •     Mo’s Lighting Rules

      •     Demonstration of lights from Arri, Dedolights, Aputure, Nanlite, Rotolight etc.

      •     Demonstration of lighting grip and control accessories from Matthews, Kupo, Manfrotto etc.

      •     Lighting demos

      ◦     Light for the look upstage side

      ◦     Big source, book light

      ◦     Low contrast / high contrast

      ◦     Hard light

      ◦     Negative fill, passive fill, cutters and grip controls

      ◦     Poorman's process (Night)

      ◦     Various lighting scenarios

      

Participant Profile:

This course will be segmented into two parts, the first two days will bring less experienced crew members up to a standard to appreciate the next 3 advanced days, which is aimed at experienced crew members who want to improve upon existing skills.

Mo Flam

Mo Flam has been working as a Chief Lighting Technician on feature films for over 30 years. Major Credits include “The English Patient” (Winner, Best Cinematography, Best Picture – 1997 Oscars) “Black Swan” (Nominee, Best Picture, Best Cinematography – 2011 Oscars) “Spotlight” (Winner, Best Picture – 2016 Oscars) and “Cold Mountain” (Nominee, Best Cinematography 2004 Oscars). Through the years Mo has had the privilege of working with many great cinematographers, including John Seale, Michael Ballhaus, Haskell Wexler, John Toll, Tom Sigel, Peter Suchitzky and Matty Libatique. Mo has done ten pictures with Academy Award-winning Cinematographer John Seale, (The English Patient) and four other Anthony Minghella films. Mo has been an early adopter and advocate of new lighting technology, including Kino Flos, Chimeras and currently LED lights.
