Custodianship of Our Stories on Screen, presented as part of the Misleór Festival of Nomadic Cultures 2024

Join us at the the Misleór Festival for the panel discussion, Custodianship of Our Stories on Screen, held in conjunction with the Misleór Festival of Nomadic Cultures. This event focuses on empowering indigenous, nomadic, and minority filmmakers to take ownership of their narratives in the film industry.

Our special guest, Liisa Holmberg from the International Sámi Film Institute, will lead this discussion and share insights into the significant role the institute has played in nurturing a new generation of Sámi filmmakers.

 

Discussion Highlights:
  • How can indigenous, nomadic, and minority filmmakers be empowered to tell their own stories on screen?

  • How can these filmmakers and their communities maintain ownership of their stories?

 

Holmberg will also speak about her work as Managing Director of the Arctic Indigenous Film Fund (AIFF), which supports Indigenous filmmakers across Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Sápmi, and Russia through funding, networking, and capacity-building programs.

 

This will be hosted by, Catherine Joyce, with special guest speakers Dr. Rosaleen McDonagh, Joshua Donoghue and Ethan Donoghue

About Misleór Festival:

The Misleór Festival of Nomadic Cultures runs from September 26 – 29, 2024, in Galway City. Misleór, meaning "wanderer" in Cant (Irish Traveller language), was established by the Galway Traveller Movement in 2019. This annual festival connects and celebrates nomadic communities worldwide through creative expression and cultural activism. About the Speaker:

Liisa Holmberg is a Sámi filmmaker from the Finnish side of Sámiland. With a career in film spanning over two decades, she has worked as a producer, production manager, and consultant. Holmberg previously served as a film commissioner at the International Sámi Film Institute and is currently the Managing Director of the Arctic Indigenous Film Fund.
