Course Profile:
With the introduction of Screen Ireland’s Sustainability Advisor Initiative and the Sustainability Innovation Fund, the role of a Sustainability Advisor on a Film/TV productions has become more prominent and has played an integral role in production’s achieving their sustainability goals. For this reason, the National Talent Academies would like to offer specialised training to new and current Advisors to equip them in their roles, ensuring they have the essential hard & soft skills to undertake the role effectively and meaningfully on a production. The aim of the course is to foster a collaborative, interactive and immersive learning space, incorporating peer & workshop-based learning elements so that participants can undertake
What this course will include:
- A brief overview of Sustainable Production Practices and Carbon Calculators in Ireland
- Introduction to Advisor roles & responsibilities.
- An overview of best practice for Sustainability Advisors.
- A breakdown of the workflow of a Sustainability Advisor on a Film/TV production.
- Critical soft and hard skills for effective advising.
- Strategies and resources for engaging and supporting productions.
- An overview of SI Sustainability Innovation Fund.
- Networking & job searching
Participant Profile:
This course is aimed at crew working in the screen industry who have an in-depth knowledge of and passion for sustainable production in Ireland. Participants are expected to have attended at least one Sustainability Training Course and have at least one Film/TV credit working as Sustainability Practitioners.

Tutor Profile:
Alex de Valera has worked in both Dublin and London in the production department, as well as as a sustainability officer, coordinator, and supervisor on large and mid-scale film, HETV, and commercial projects. She has worked for Netflix, Constantin, Max Films, Metropolitan, Amazon Studios, Magic Light Pictures, Pull The Trigger, Assembly and Big Fish TV. Her credits include Fate: The Winx Saga S2, The Diplomat S1, The Problem With People, Silver, and The Velveteen Rabbit to name a few.
With over 8 years of experience in ensuring sustainable practices and specialised training in the hospitality sector, and a first-class honours BSc in European Studies from Trinity College Dublin, Alex moved into the film industry to deliver sustainability to its highest standard. Alex continuously researches and looks for new ways in which systems can be streamlined so that productions can use meaningful strategies and reduce emissions. Alex has set up her own company, Ecoscope Ltd, to support and help productions make the change for a sustainable future. Alex recently completed the 'Circular Economy and Sustainability Strategies course run by the University of Cambridge Judge Business School Executive Education. She has undergone training in Albert, AdGreen, Greenshoot and Screen Ireland's Supervisory Management course, continually developing her skill set throughout her career.
Alex was elected as the Training Officer for the Sustainability Guild of Ireland 2022. Alex has recently developed a workshop for Screen Ireland to fill a skills gap in the sector by training Sustainability Practitioners on how to achieve and reach the Production's sustainability objectives successfully. Alex has recently been engaged as the Global Production Network’s Sustainability Consultant. Alex is passionate about training and upskilling and is eager to share her experience and expertise.
