Course Profile:

This course will run over 3 x days; Saturday, Sunday, and Monday from 09:30am to 5:30pm.

The aim of this training programme is to provide the necessary skills and background for working camera assistants and camera operators to make use of a Steadicam system to best effect and safely.  The Silver Workshop is a three day workshop designed to get beginners to Steadicam operating in the shortest possible time but is often also attended by operators with some Steadicam experience.

We use the larger rigs from the M-Series and base the workshop around the Tiffen Steadicam Short Course syllabus. This covers all basic techniques and looks at blocking out shots, compositional aspects and timing. This workshop includes a recorded sequence with group analysis.

Training Objectives

On completion of the training programme the participants will be able to:

  • Assemble the Steadicam and fit camera and all accessories.
  • Understand the principles of operation of a Steadicam.
  • Balance the system correctly including dynamic balance.
  • Put on and adjust the operators vest for best fit.
  • Adjust the suspension arm for the camera weight.
  • Understand rest positions.
  • Start and stop smoothly.
  • Post pan sled.
  • Body pan sled.
  • Track shooting sideways.
  • Circle the subject.
  • Walk forward shoot back.
  • Switch forward and back.
  • Handle actor sitting and standing from a chair.
  • Tackle steps and stairs.
  • Handle corners and corridors to best advantage.
  • Change to low mode.
  • Understand blocking out a shot.
  • Have knowledge of working in adverse conditions.
  • Communicate with clients and directors.

Equipment Used:

All equipment will be current model Tiffen Steadicam product except where third party manufactured equipment is required as support. For the Silver this will include: Steadicam M-Series; M1 & M2 and Zephyr. We have also incorporated the new Steadicam Volt into the syllabus.  A range of vests and arms will be available to use.

Participant Profile:

Participants should be experienced camera assistants and camera operators working in the Irish live action Film & TV industry who are interested in developing the skills to use Steadicam.

Please note, we anticipate the application for this training to be highly competitive . If you are applying, please note that all three days are mandatory, and if you are on a job, you will be expected to book off Monday 10th July to attend the full course.

Tutor Profile:

Danny Hallett originally qualified in Lithography and Mechanical Engineering with London City & Guilds. His deep interest in Film Production and background in manufacturing led him to take a position with Tiffen International in 2006. He has since been working around Steadicam® for 16 years joining in the same year as his colleague, Robin and attended his own first 3 day workshop at the BBC Wood Norton Studios in 2006. 

Now working alongside Robin Thwaites at Tiffen International primarily on the Motion Picture side of the business, he has helped expand the Steadicam Workshops into the well-known Bronze, Silver and Gold formats now known throughout the UK, Europe and beyond as an organizer and key instructor in each of the standards. He also rolled out the concepts to numerous Universities including the SAE schools across Europe, and still “Trains the Trainers” with how to teach Steadicam. Alongside Robin, and the esteemed Garrett Brown, Jerry Holway and Chris Fawcett, and many other well-known local professionals.

He's been on the instructor line up at Gold Workshops such as the Malibu Classic USA, Tenerife Gold, Turkey- Gold, Denmark-Gold, UK – Gold, Gran Canaria – Gold, Australia, the UK, Sicily's Terra di Cinema events, plus countless Bronze and Silver courses in the UK and Europe to date.
