Course Profile:

This course will run over three consecutive days; Friday 19th, Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st May,2023

Course Times              Day 1:  10:00am – 5:00pm

                                    Day 2:  10:00am – 5:00pm

          Day 3:  10:00am – 5:00pm 

 

This course is run by the National Talent Academies: Film & TV Crew Academy East,  developed in collaboration with the Model Makers Guild of Ireland.  The aim of the course is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to sculpt a life size portrait sculpture in clay, from a live model. All the appropriate techniques will be discussed and demonstrated, including basic head and neck anatomy, understanding and depicting 3 dimensional form, capturing dynamic movement and expression, measuring, design, materials handling, surface finishing, etc. 

Course Content:

  • Set up, introduction to tools and materials
  • Depicting 3d form using observation, measuring and sight size techniques
  • Building the form from armature, through basic block-in, to finished details
  • Basic head and neck anatomy
  • Surface finishing
  • Considerations for moulding casting and firing (although these are not covered in the course)

Course Outcomes:

Participants will come away with a finished 3 dimensional portrait in clay, which can then be photographed and the clay recycled, or moulded, cast or fired. They will also have a more general understanding of rendering 3d form in clay, and of depiction of the human form, as well as a knowledge of the tools and techniques used in the process.

This 3 day portrait sculpture workshop is aimed at Assistant and Senior Model Makers working in the in the Film and TV Drama Industry.

Tutor Profile:

Alan Clarke is an award winning sculptor, illustrator and tutor. He is the only Irish member of the Society of Portrait Sculptors. He is head drawing tutor on the Illustration course in NCAD. In recent years he has taught workshops in the UK, Spain, Italy, Russia, and regularly in Ireland. He is former chairman of the Illustrators Guild of Ireland. He is a passionate advocate of skills-based art.
