Micro-credential in Entertainment Law with University of Galway
University of Galway and National Talent Academy Film & TV Drama are delighted to announce the return of the Micro-credential in Entertainment Law.
This course's objective is to give participants an understanding of the laws governing audiovisual or entertainment media: broadcasting, film, video, video games, drama, music, etc., on traditional and online platforms.
This online course is primarily aimed at participants who do not have a law background. However, participants with a law background will also find new concepts introduced, particularly if they have not engaged with entertainment law before.
The concepts of artistic expression and commercial speech, and their protection in international and domestic law, will be explored. Structural regulation will be considered, particularly recent developments at European level in AI, copyright, broadcasting and on-demand services.
Content restrictions, such as those relating to protection of minors, blasphemy, sex and violence, pornography and racism, will be discussed.
Other important topics to be covered include:
- Copyright;
- Generative AI;
- Recording and publishing contracts;
- Performing rights;
- Film and video classification;
- Rights of publicity;
- Advertising,
- Sponsorship;
- Unfair competition
Producers, Writers and Directors working in live action drama/fiction are now eligible to apply for one of NTA Film and TV designated placements on this course, with the course fee fully covered by the NTA for Film and TV Drama.
Other individuals working in the entertainment industry and those interested in expanding their knowledge of entertainment law may apply directly to the University of Galway through their Online Application Portal. Further information is available HERE
Dates/Duration:
The online course will run for Semester one of the Academic Year 2024/25, beginning early- September.
Online sessions will take place on a week-day evening (approx. 7-9PM) every two weeks for twelve weeks, with the exact set day/hours to be confirmed. Participants will also have access to pre-recorded material outside of these scheduled hours.
Who Can Apply:
To apply for the University of Galway Micro-credential course, you may apply with or without a Level 8 undergraduate qualification (or equivalent). If you are an established professional with relevant industry experience without a Level 8 undergraduate, you can still be considered through the NTA route.
If you do not hold a Level 8 qualification, and are selected, you will be asked to complete a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) document. This allows you to map your professional experience and training against Level 8 standards. Guidance will be provided throughout this process, but please only apply if you are comfortable undertaking this exercise.
This course is aimed at professionals working in the entertainment industry or those seeking to deepen their understanding of entertainment law. It is best suited to emerging or established talent with a solid understanding of the screen sector, and not recommended for entry-level applicants.
To be eligible for one of the NTA Film and TV designated placements you must:
- Be a Producer, Writer or Director, with at least three professional credits.
- Be living and working in Ireland (if selected proof will be required)
- Applicants must be over 21 years of age (if selected proof will be required)
- Applicants must be out of part-time or full-time education; recent graduates are also welcome to apply.
Additional weighting will be given to applicants who meet the above criteria, identify as diverse, or are based in the regions, or come from socially or economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and/or demonstrate a strong commitment to GEDI (Gender, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion) principles. If you do not meet the above criteria, are over 21 and have a Level 8 undergraduate qualification or equivalent, you may still apply via the University of Galway but note there is a course fee.

This application form will ask you to supply a download link (This will be a link to a folder shared on a service such as Google Drive, WeTransfer, Dropbox etc.) to the following materials.
- Media CV or professional biography detailed summary of work, education and training to date.
- A short Personal Statement detailing how this initiative will progress your career (up to 1 pages or filmed statement of up to 2 minutes)
- Proof of your educational qualifications - i.e. transcript, or scan of degree. Alternatively, if this does not apply, a completed "Recognition of Prior Learning Document" will be required.
You may submit your application without the qualification document if there is a delay in obtaining it. However, your place on the course will only be confirmed once proof of qualification is received by August 18th. We strongly recommend starting the retrieval process as early as possible to avoid delays.
