Micro-credential in Entertainment Law with University of Galway 

 

Due to the high interest stated in a recent NTA Expression of Interest, University of Galway and National Talent Academy for Film & TV Drama are delighted to announce a newly developed, bespoke, Micro-credential in Entertainment Law. 

This course's objective is to give participants an understanding of the law governing audiovisual or entertainment media: broadcasting, film, TV, games, drama, music, etc., on traditional and online platforms.  

This online course is primarily aimed at participants who do not have a law background. However, participants with a law background will also find new concepts introduced, particularly if they have not engaged with entertainment law before. 

The concepts of artistic expression and commercial speech, and their protection in international and domestic law, will be explored. Structural regulation will be considered, particularly recent developments at European level in AI, copyright, broadcasting and on-demand services.  

Content restrictions, such as those relating to protection of minors, blasphemy, sex and violence, pornography and racism, will be discussed. 

Other important topics to be covered include:  

  • Copyright;  
  • Generative AI;  
  • Recording and publishing contracts;  
  • Performing rights;  
  • Film and video classification;  
  • Rights of publicity;  
  • Advertising,  
  • Sponsorship;  
  • Unfair competition  

Producers, Writers and Directors working in live action drama/fiction are now eligible to apply for one of NTA Film and TV designated placements on this course, with the course fee fully covered by the NTA for Film and TV Drama.  Deadline to apply to the NTA is August 15th at 17.00 

Other individuals working in the entertainment industry and those interested in expanding their knowledge of entertainment law may apply directly to the University of Galway through their Online Application Portal. Further information is available here

 

Dates/Duration:  

The online course will run for Semester one of the Academic Year 2024/25. 

Online sessions every two weeks for twelve weeks, with the exact set day/hours to be confirmed. Participants will also have access to pre-recorded material outside of these scheduled hours. 

 

Who Can Apply:  

To apply for this University of Galway Micro-credential course, you need a Level 8 undergraduate qualification or equivalent. However, if you don't have a Level 8 qualification, you can still apply through the NTA. If selected, you will need to complete a ‘Recognition of Prior Learning Document.’ This document will map your industry learning and Skills training to demonstrate that it meets the Level 8 equivalent based on your highest form of education or certified learning. Guidance and assistance will be provided but please only apply if you are comfortable doing this exercise.  

This course is geared towards people working in the entertainment industry, or anyone interested in learning more about entertainment law.  It is recommended for emerging and establishing talent who have a strong understanding of the screen sector. It is not recommended for new or entry talent. 

To be eligible for one of the NTA Film and TV designated placements you must:  

  • Identify as diverse and/or be based in the region  
  • note within the Academies, diversity includes Gender, Disability, Language, Sexual orientation, Race, Religion, Membership of an underrepresented community and/or a Socioeconomic disadvantaged group. Please see us Diversity & Inclusion Policy for more information
  • Be a Producers, Writers or Directors, with professional credits.  
  • Living and working in Ireland (if selected proof will be required) 
  • Applicants must be over 21 years of age (if selected proof will be required) 
  • Applicants must be out of part-time or full-time education; recent graduates are also welcome to apply.  

If you do not meet the above criteria, are over 21 and have a Level 8 undergraduate qualification or equivalent, you may still apply via the University of Galway, but note there is a course fee.

This application form will ask you to supply a download link (This will be a link to a folder shared on a service such as Google Drive, WeTransfer, Dropbox etc.) to the following materials.   

  • Media CV or professional biography detailed summary of work, education and training to date. 
  • A short Personal Statement detailing how this initiative will progress your career (up to 1 pages or filmed statement of up to 2 minutes)  

Incomplete applications will not be considered.    

The NTA Film & TV will meet all access requirements of the selected applicants and cover the associated costs.
