Course Profile:

This course is 12 hours in total (4 modules, each 3 hours) over two days and teaches people how to assist someone who is developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. Participants will learn the signs and symptoms of mental health problems and what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective. They will learn a framework for communication, how to offer and provide initial help, and how to guide a person towards appropriate treatments and other supportive help.

Mental health crises covered would include:

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Self-harm
  • Panic attacks
  • Traumatic events
  • Severe psychotic states
  • Severe effects of alcohol or other drug use
  • Aggressive behaviours

The course format will cater for all learning styles with opportunities to participate, discuss scenarios and practice skills. Course participants will receive a copy of the MHFA Manual and a Certificate of Completion.

Participant Profile:

This course is open to those who are looking to work in the welfare/mental health area of the screen sector and crew members that would like to develop tools to manage stress, leading to improved mental health and career sustainability.

Mental Health First Aid Ireland is the only licenced provider of Mental Health First Aid in Ireland and is part of the International MHFA community now delivering in 30 countries worldwide.

The Mental Health First Aid course curriculum is informed by a series of guidelines developed through the Delphi Consensus Method which includes people with lived experience of mental health problems and caregivers, in addition to clinical and research experts.

MHFA has received a number of international awards, including in Ireland the Irish Healthcare Award and the IBEC Keep Well Award.
