This online workshop is designed to answer fundamental questions about the legal rights connected to a film and its component parts and the contracts required to acquire, clear, and protect those rights. Participants will gain an understanding of the importance of negotiating clear agreements with all of those involved in both the creative and practical aspects of a production.

 

Course Content: 
  • Explanation of the principal intellectual property rights relevant for filmmakers: Copyright, Moral Rights, Performers’ Rights. 

  • Copyright Explained: the rights of creatives and performers. 

  • Intellectual Property rights explained. 

  • The key elements of a contract. 

  • Practical guidance on negotiating film contracts. 

  • Demystifying commonly used legal terminology. 

  • Importance of evaluating those with whom collaboration is envisaged before committing to do so. 

Please note, this is an informal online session and guests will be asked to keep their camera on and participate in the discission and Q&A.  

 

Tutor Profile: 

Tony Morris is a legal advisor in the Media and Entertainment sectors, specialising in the Film, TV, and Music Industries. He is a consultant with London law firm, Level. With extensive experience spanning many years, his principal focus is with clients who develop, finance, produce and distribute films and other audio-visual content, record companies, music publishers, composers and musicians, screenwriters and other authors, creatives and influencers.  

Tony is the author of 'The Filmmakers' Legal Guide', a practical ‘how-to’ book aimed at producers, and has over two decades of experience teaching the legal aspects of audio-visual production at universities and film schools across Europe. Tony is also an accredited mediator and a member of the panel of arbitrators of the Independent Film & Television Alliance. 

 

Dates/Duration: 

This online course will take place on Wednesday 27th September 2023 from (approx.) 3:00pm to 6:00pm. 

 

Who Can Apply: 

This session is recommended for emerging producers and screenwriters in live-action drama, as well as producers, directors and writers of all skill and career levels. It is also suitable for those interested in learning about the legal side of filmmaking.
