Duration:  2 Day in-person workshop. 10am – 4pm both days.

Course Profile:

This course will run over 2 consecutive days

The course aims to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to work over a pre-made and pre-posed armature. Participants will build up all the major and some of the minor muscle groups, resulting in a complete ‘skin-off’ human figure in 3 dimensions.

The course will cover all aspects of human anatomy as it affects the outward appearance of the figure and its movement.

A live model will be present for reference.

Course Content:

  • Modelling 3-dimensional form from observation; the form and structure of the human body, including major and minor muscle groups and skeletal anatomy.
  • The dynamics of human movement and expression.
  • Handling and finishing of all the relevant materials.

Course Outcomes:

Participants will come away with a finished 3 dimensional portrait in clay, which can then be photographed. They will also have a more general understanding of rendering 3d form in clay, and of depiction of the human form, as well as a knowledge of the tools and techniques used in the process.

Participant Profile:

This course would be of benefit to modelmakers, make-up artists, and anyone working in any way with the human form, and anyone interested in any sort of depiction of the human form.

The course is limited to 9 participants per course.

Tutor Profiles:

Alan Clarke is an award winning sculptor, illustrator and tutor. He is the only Irish member of the Society of Portrait Sculptors. He is head drawing tutor on the Illustration course in NCAD. In recent years he has taught workshops in the UK, Spain, Italy, Russia, and regularly in Ireland. He is former chairman of the Illustrators Guild of Ireland. He is a passionate advocate of skills-based art.
