This online course is run by National Talent Academies Crew West. The aim of this course is to provide participants with a practical understanding of Gaeilge in order to foster bilingual sets and an inclusive Irish-language environment.
Gaeilge has been experiencing a cultural resurgence in recent years. Interest in the language is growing, and with that, interest in Irish language media. In order to create inclusive environments in Irish-language sets, this course has been designed to teach Film & TV terminology in Irish, give participants a greater understanding of the language itself, and the building blocks to progress their language skills.
Course content:
This course has been designed to bring people working in the Film & TV industry back into the language. No matter where you are in your understanding – basic or confident – this course will give you the foundational building blocks to understand the language, the terminology that would be used on an Irish-language or bilingual film set, and the confidence to progress professionally within the language.
Session 1 - 6th May | Bealtaine: Returning to /Beginning with Gaeilge. What does the language look and sound like. What are the essential building blocks? Tips and tricks that were never covered at school that will unlock understandings of native speakers & dialects.
Session 2 - 7th May | Bealtaine: Specifically on set. Film & TV terminology as Gaeilge. What are each department known as, what are the technical terms, how they have come about. How to be respectful of the language and operate on an Irish-language/bilingual set.
Session 3 - 8th May | Bealtaine: Language in context – who speaks Gaeilge and where – resources to progress your language journey – what pitfalls are there to watch out for – giving you the confidence to understand any dialect and context on a film or TV set.
Participant Profile:
Are you a worker in the Screen industry with an interest in developing their understanding of Irish? Would you like to work on bilingual sets, and develop an understanding of film terminology as Gaeilge? Would you like to celebrate the language separate from the school environment and obtain foundational skills to progress you on your language journey? Then this course is made for you!

Tutor Profile:
Kevin Hussey, also known as Caoimhghín Ó hEodhasa in Irish-language circles, is an actor and advocate for the Irish language. A proud Limerickian, Caoimhghín had to learn Irish, and uses this experience to help inspire others along their language journey.
As a worker in Film & TV, Caoimhghín has worked as an Irish-language advisor on films, documentaries, TV series and soap operas, and even taught Conan O’Brien to use his cúpla focal when he appeared on Ros na Rún!
Having acted in engaging and groundbreaking shows, such as TG4 first ever mockumentary “An Poitín” and An Taibhdhearc’s trailblazing LGBTQ+ play “Waltsáil Abhaile” – Caoimhghín also creates short form entertainment and educational content on TikTok and Instagram under the handle @kevin_ar_tuathal.
