Course Profile:
This course will run over 1 day on location in Spiddal, Co. Galway.
There will be an opportunity for work placement on completion of the course.
Film & TV Crew Academy West is managed by Atlantic Academy.
This in-person course is run by National Talent Academies Crew West. The aim of the course is to provide participants with the basic knowledge required to start on a production in the assistant director's department. It is a practical hands-on course and will enable participants to hit the ground running on their first day in the AD department.
Course content:
- Communication between set and unit base
- Communication with on-set crew
- Liaising with hair/make-up/costume
- How to be a stand-in
- Walkie etiquette
- Locking off
- Reading call sheets, schedules, DooDs and script revisions.
- Relay calls – standing by, rolling, cut, moving on ect.
- How to cue extras, stunts, action vehicles, animals
- Arranging extras
- Constructing call sheets
- Schedule theory
Participant Profile:
This course is aimed at new entrants to the AD department or Trainee ADs with limited experience.

Tutor Profile:
Nicola Jackson
For over a decade, Nicola Jackson has been a dedicated contributor to the Irish Film & Television industry. Her experience spans a diverse range of productions, encompassing everything from micro-budget projects like "The Edge Of Chaos," to cherished Irish creations like "Moone Boy" and "KIN," to large-scale international endeavours such as "Game Of Thrones" and Disney's "Disenchanted."
Nicola's journey commenced as a chaperone for young actors on RTE's "Roy," a JAM Media production. This role laid the foundation for her career, and at the age of 29, she transitioned to the AD department, embarking on her trainee path. Throughout her tenure in the industry, she has worked as a Trainee, 3rd AD, 2nd AD, Extras Coordinator, and more recently on RTE’s Obituary as 1st AD.
