Course Profile:
This course would run over 1 to 2 days.
This course will guide participants through the fundamentals of visual storytelling, lighting techniques, camera operation, and composition. Through a combination of theory and practice, participants will learn how to maximise creativity and production values while working within the constraints of limited resources.
This course aims to equip participants with the skills and mindset necessary to make their mark on the short film world and empower them to create visually compelling scenes without breaking the bank.
Proposed course content:
- Building your team: What skills you should look for. Being resourceful, creative, and flexible when building a small team for maximum effect.
- Soft skills: Developing relationships with the Director & HODs and leading your team.
- Cinematography on limited resources: Design tricks and what to consider.
- Essential technical skills for Cinematographers on low-mid budget shorts.
- A Cinematographer’s kit on low-mid budget shorts.
- Building a relationship with camera and lighting houses.
Participant Profile:
This course is aimed at Cinematographers who have some experience working on low-mid budget short films and music videos. Participants should be at a point in their career where they have DoP’d on a funded short or are on the precipice of doing so.

Tutor Profile:
Alba Fernandez is a cinematographer based in Dublin and is currently one of Ireland’s most exciting female cinematographers. Recent work includes Callus and Animal, both winners of Best Cinematography at the European Cinematography Awards 2023, Stable (Winner of Best Cinematography at Women in Film & TV Ireland Showcase 2023) and Licence for Nil, which were all selected for Galway Film Fleadh 2023. She also shot Irish language feature Documentary Reds na hEireann for TG4 and Virgin Media TV’s Inside The Hospice alongside Eleanor Bowman. In 2021, she won the Donal Gilligan Award for Best Cinematography in a Short Film for her work in Faitíos.
