Course Objective:

The National Talent Academies are seeking to create a resource of screen sector crew speakers who can develop and deliver engaging, clear, informative and confident presentations to aspiring new industry entrants. Topics for the presentations can include their own career journey in the industry (and how they got their start), an overview of their department, an overview of roles in their department, what prep, shoot, and wrap looks like for their department, what makes a good trainee, production etiquette, the life of a freelancer, and the mindset needed – to mention a few. The aim of the presentations would be to give a high level, industry relevant insight into working in the industry, across the full spectrum of departments and roles. 

The aim of this in-person practical course is to provide participants with the key skills to develop the confidence and capacity to deliver compelling and influential presentations with a focus on storytelling.

Crew that have completed this training will be invited to apply to be part of the NTA’s panel of Screen Sector Crew Speakers.

Course Profile:

This course will run over one day on Saturday May 6th 09:30am-3:30pm.

During the course, the focus will be on the importance of knowing your audience, the impact of body language and how visual aids and storytelling can increase the impact of the message and captivate the audience. The course is a one-stop shop for delivering clear, confident and meaningful presentations.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Use impactful visual aids to support their message
  • Know how to control nerves and appear highly confident
  • Know how to distill and craft key messages
  • Recognise the link between their communication style and the impact that can have on others
  • Appreciate why telling a compelling story is so vital to success
  • Gauge audience engagement and adapt their presentations to suit
  • Identify key areas they need to work on to improve their presentation skills

TOPIC 1: PREPARATION AND PRESENTATION DESIGN

  • Setting the objectives for the presentation
  • Gathering key information
  • Developing a narrative and supporting visual aids
  • Creating a visually appealing presentation - text, graphics, do's and don'ts
  • Bringing it all together - structure and flow of the presentation
  • The importance of practice, practice, practice

TOPIC 2: DELIVERING WITH IMPACT

  • Voice skills, effective body language, and relaxation techniques
  • Generating engagement and interest in what you are saying
  • Voice and language to use for maximum impact
  • Controlling your nerves

TOPIC 3: THE NEED FOR STORYTELLING

  • The importance of storytelling presentation skills
  • What impact does storytelling have on our audience?
  • The anatomy of a story - must-haves
  • Aristotle’s 5-point plan and the Rule of 3

TOPIC 4: KEY PRESENTATION SKILLS

  • Profiling your audience for levels of interest and influence
  • Adapting to different levels of understanding
  • Getting your point and ideas across clearly and persuasively
  • Dealing with difficult situations and thinking on your feet
  • Controlling questions & response
Participant Profile:

This course will be aimed at crew members across all departments and grades who are very enthused to share their industry insight, knowledge, and experience with aspiring new entrants to the Screen Sector.
