Deaf Awareness Webinar with the Irish Deaf Society

NTA Film & TV, in collaboration with the Irish Deaf Society, is delighted to present an online workshop designed to highlight the experiences of the Deaf community and the issues and barriers they face. 

This online session aims to provide guidance and insight for those with little or no experience engaging with the Deaf community, helping to build understanding and confidence in communicating in a Deaf-friendly way. It will also explore the culture and language of the Deaf community. Raising awareness is key to breaking down barriers and challenging unfounded attitudes. 

 

Our Deaf Awareness Session covers the following topics: 

  • Irish Sign Language (ISL): A brief explanation of the language and the ISL Act 2017 

  • Deaf Community: Understanding the Deaf community as a linguistic minority including both Deaf and hearing people, with discussion of positive Deafness and Deaf identity 

  • Lip-reading video challenge 

  • Correct terminology 

  • Barriers faced by Deaf people 

  • Best practices when communicating with a Deaf person 

  • ISL Challenge: Learn how to spell your name and some basic signs/phrases related to film and TV 

  • Q&A and Discussion 

Please note: Limited places are available for this session. Cameras must be on, and active participation is required. Please do not register if you are unavailable on the date below or unable to participate fully to the best of your ability. 

 

Who Can Register: 

This  session is for anyone in the screen sector who is seeking a better understanding of the Deaf  Community. It is recommended for those with little or no experience with the  Deaf  Community. 

 

Dates and Duration: 

Online on December 3rd at 6pm for approx. one hour.  

 

How To Register: 

Interested participants must apply by completing the registration form HERE 

This form will ask you to provide a short work biography and a brief statement outlining why you would like to take part in this session, and how it will support your career and/or skills development. 

Incomplete registration forms, or those missing the required information, will not be considered. 

Deadline to register is Thursday 20th November at 12 noon 

Please note that registration does not guarantee attendance. Selected participants will be notified by 27th November. 

 

Selection Process:   

Only 40 places are available for this session.  Applications will be assessed by a panel that may include representatives from the National Talent Academy for Film & Television, and independent external assessors.

About The Irish Deaf Society:

The IDS is the only national Deaf-led representative organisation of the Deaf, and it serves the interests and welfare of the Deaf community. It provides a number of education, personal and social services to Deaf children, adults, and their families.
