Course: Hand Draughting for Film & TV

Course Profile:
This programme is aimed at those who have no or basic draughting and/or surveying skills and have either worked or studied for 3 years. All coursework is done in pencil. This course will focus on surveying a space and drawing a survey plan as a means of learning and demonstrating the basic skills of draughting.
The course will cover the following:
Beginners’ Draughting for Film & Television.
DAY 1
- An introduction to how the art department works.
- An introduction to the principles of scale and dimensioning.
- The basics of draughting: use of instruments, pencils, line weight, etc
- Short practical exercise in surveying
- Setting up a drawing, choosing a scale and drawing up a survey plan, including a short slideshow demonstration.
DAY 2
- Short exercise on the principles of drafting geometry
- Discussion on line weight, & using texture to indicate set finishes.
- Setting up new drawing, choosing a scale and starting plans/elevations of a new set, and drawing layout.
- Short slideshow using an example of a set to demonstrate how the design process works from preliminary concepts, choosing a location, creating construction drawings and building the final set.
DAYS 3 – 5
- Students to continue with another survey exercise.
- Carry on with drawing up of survey over the 3 days.
- Overview of drawing presentation, dimensioning, style, hatching/sectioning, titles and lettering etc. with use of sample presentations and individual instruction.
- Making an intervention at the surveyed location, e.g., a new flat.
- Presentation on set design from research to working drawings and construction to final set.
- Review of drawings, Q&A based on participants’ questions.
Participant Profile:
This programme is aimed at participants who have who have little or no previous draughting and/or surveying skills in the art department.
The course is limited to 8 participants per course.
