COLOUR AND SHAPE IN VISUAL DEVELOPMENT
The National Talent Academy for Animation is launching our online Intensive Design Workshop Series with Antonio Terlizzi - Colour and Shape in Visual Development.
Course Overview:
This course will guide students through Visual Development for environments and characters with a focus on the fundamentals of light and colour. Through a combination of theory and practice, students will develop their colour skills through painting, sketches and quick studies. They will develop a method for studying, analysing and realising lighting and vis dev concepts. Participants will have the opportunity to create numerous portfolio pieces, including small lighting studies, a location map, a concept key and a character study.
The workshop is ideal for junior animation designers and concept or background artists who have a decent working knowledge of 2D design for environments.
Dates: Saturday September 14th, Saturday September 21st, Saturday September 28th, Thursday October 3rd, Saturday October 12th, Saturday October 19th, Thursday October 24th & Saturday November 9th.
Duration: 8 classes, 3 hours each, 10am - 1pm.
Location: Online via Zoom.
Cost: There is no cost to the participants but places are limited.
Places: 8.

Requirements
This is an intensive course and candidates MUST be available for all classes and will be required to hand in assignments.
Candidates must have access to Photoshop, Procreate or any similar software for digital painting.
Candidates must have access to Google Drive.
Candidates must be resident in Ireland.
Course content:
Class 1:
Introduction of the class, the course and the learning agreement. The first class will cover:

Learning how to see & simplifying shapes.

Block tracing technique.

Working with references.
-
What is light? (Key light, secondary light, ambient fill and occlusion, bounce light, subsurface scattering, colour bleed and reflections.)
Class 2:
The second class will cover:

Values structure, arrangement & grouping.
-
Simplifying the big picture.
-
Simple structure, edges and exposure.
-
Compress shading (3 to 5 values technique).
Class 3:
The third class will cover:
-
Notan study.
-
Composition and intentional design.
-
Horizon line and rule of thirds.
-
Types of compositions
-
Primary and secondary focus.
-
Rest vs complexity.
-
Rhythm and flow.
-
Western vs Eastern structure of a picture
-
Shapes in context, proportions and types of visual narrative contrasts.
Class 4:
The fourth class will cover:

What is colour? HSB + Temperature + Exposure.

Understanding the colour wheel.
-
Colour harmony.
-
Colour schemes.
-
Analysing colour temperature.
-
Ghost images.
-
Colour constancy.
-
Analysing colour schemes in painting.
Class 5:
The fifth class will cover:

Types of contrast.

Major and Minor Keys.

Itten’s Seven types of colour contrasts.

Different lighting scenarios.
Class 6:
The sixth class will cover:

Introduction to Vis Dev. References for environments, for style.

Perspective and composition.
-
Thumbnailing and Blocking.

How to set up a map.
-
How to get an isometric view.
Class 7:
The seventh class will cover:

Character Development.
-
Basic ingredients of visual language for characters (line, proportion, rhythm, shapes, contrast, silhouette, unity vs variety, volume).

Gesture drawing and attitude poses.
Class 8:
The eighth and final class will cover:

Materials.

Light and texture.

Saturation point in transition.

Hard and soft edges.
-
Drive the eye.

Painting details.
-
Students presenting their own pitches.
