An introduction to the VFX Production Department using Flow (formerly ShotGrid)

The National Talent Academy for VFX is excited to partner with Kevin Carolan to offer 12 participants a place on ‘Introduction to the VFX Production Department using Flow (formerly ShotGrid) Software.

This course will run on 4 evenings over 4 weeks.

Course Content:

Week 1:

An introduction to the various roles the Production department plays in the VFX industry and the software they use on a daily basis.

Week 2:

A beginners guide Shotgrid/Flow (the production management tracking software). A more hands on walkthrough of the platform's interface along with a tutorial for navigating through the database.

Week 3:

Preparing and running reviews/dailies with Supervisors and Clients. We will look at the various review platforms offered by Shotgrid/Flow and how to tailor each one to your needs.

Week 4:

How to get what YOU need out of Shotgrid/Flow by personalising pages and tools previously covered in the course.

Course Objectives:

• Introduce the role the production department has in a production and understand what each member of the team adds to the day to day of the show.
• Understand the importance of having an organised and user friendly database at your fingertips (Shotgrid/Flow)
• Using Shotgrid/Flow in a way that makes sense to you and your team by learning skills, tips and tricks that you can utilize across different companies.

Expected Outcomes:

By the end of this course, participants will have a firm understanding of what each member of the production team (Production Assistant, Coordinator, Supervisor, Manager) plays in a Production. Along with this, you will also obtain the skills and techniques that many tend to learn “on the job” before working on your first show.

This course is aimed at those who are looking to make the exciting first step into the VFX/TV/Film/Gaming industry. This course may be of interest to someone who has worked in a similar field where people management was required. It may also be of interest to those who like to work with excel or other data based softwares.
